USA for Africa (7/3/1985)

Η συνεχόμενη ξηρασία, οι υποβαθμισμένες αγροτικές υποδομές, η απομόνωση της Αιθιοπίας λόγω των πολιτικών της στρατιωτικής δικτατορίας του Μενγκιστου και ο συνεχιζόμενος εμφύλιος πόλεμος στην περιοχή, έφερε ένα καταστροφικό λιμό που μέτρησε 1.000.000 θύματα. Η παγκόσμια κοινότητα είχε σοκαριστεί από τις εικόνες σκελετωμένων ανθρώπων, κυρίως παιδιών, που πέθαιναν από την ασιτία. Ο ΟΗΕ έστελνε βοήθεια που μετά βίας κάλυπτε το ήμισυ του πληθυσμού.
Το τραγικό γεγονός που εξελισσόταν ευαισθητοποίησε την καλλιτεχνική κοινότητα τόσο στο Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο όσο και στην Αμερική.
Ο Harry Belafonde,με αφορμή το αντίστοιχο βρετανικό project "Band Aid" του 1984, όπου καλλιτέχνες από το Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο και την Ιρλανδία (Bono, Phil Collins, Boy George, Tony Hadley, George Michael, Duran Duran, Sting κα) ένωσαν τις δυνάμεις τους στην ηχογράφηση του τραγουδιού "Do they know its Christmas?" για τη στήριξη των πληγέντων από τον λιμό στην Αιθιοπία, εμπνεύστηκε την σύμπραξη καλλιτεχνών των ΗΠΑ, με αντίστοιχο στόχο, την οικονομική ενίσχυση των ανθρώπων που αντιμετώπιζαν τον λιμο.
Και η έμπνευση πήρε σάρκα και οστά. Ανέθεσε στους Michael Jackson και Lionel Richie να γράψουν τους στίχους και την μουσική ενός τραγουδιού και την παραγωγή στον Quincy Jones. Στόχος να γράψουν ένα τραγούδι με εύκολους στίχους που θα θυμάται ο οποιοσδήποτε και θα έχει ένα δυνατό μήνυμα.

Ανταποκρίθηκαν άμεσα 45 καλλιτέχνες, εκπρόσωποι όλων των ειδών της μουσικής με διαφορετική αισθητική και μην έχοντας ξανασυνεργαστεί η και συναντηθεί μεταξύ τους. Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Harry Belafonde,Cyndi Lauper, Tina Turner, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Dianna Ross, Ray Charles, Stievie Wonder, Βοb Geldof, Scott Travis, Latoya Jackson...και πολλοί ακόμα.

Λίγο μετά τις 9 το βράδυ άρχισαν να καταφθανουν οι καλλιτέχνες στο στούντιο της A&M. Ακολούθησαν πιστά την οδηγία των υπευθύνων που ήταν ανερτημένη στην πορτα "CHECK YOUR EGO AT THE DOOR" και με ενθουσιασμό, συγκίνηση και πάθος ηχογράφησαν το "WE ARE THE WORLD"
Η ηχογράφηση ολοκληρώθηκε στις 8 το πρωί της επόμενης ημέρας, με ενδιάμεσες παύσεις φορτισμένων συναισθηματικά στιγμών, ( παρουσία 2 γυναικών από την Αιθιοπία που θέλησαν να ευχαριστήσουν για την ευγενή κίνηση των καλλιτεχνών προς την χώρα τους) αλλά και στιγμών έντονου χιούμορ και αυτοσαρκασμου ( ο Stievie Wonder "απείλησε" τους τραγουδιστές ότι αν δεν βγάλουν με την πρώτη την ηχογράφηση, θα αναγκαστεί να τους γυρίσει στα σπίτια τους οδηγώντας μαζί με τον Ray Charles! Και οι δύο τυφλοί!)
Tο τραγούδι κυκλοφόρησε στις 7 Μαρτίου του 1985, κατέκτησε πολλά βραβεία και οι πωλήσεις του συγκέντρωσαν το ποσό των 63.000.000 $ (σημερινή αντιστοιχία 141.000.000 $).....
Αναπολώντας αυτό το πρότζεκτ μου μένει μια γλυκόπικρη γεύση. Γλυκιά για την δύναμη της αλληλεγγύης και πικρή για το αποτέλεσμα που πάντα είναι λίγο, δεν φτάνει,....στην Αφρική τα παιδιά πεθαίνουν ακομα.
